100 Common Russian Adjectives: Meanings and Examples

On this page

Use Russian adjectives to describe people, places, objects, and experiences. This selection contains 100 common and useful adjectives, with meanings and examples; it is not a frequency ranking from a corpus.

The headwords below are masculine singular forms in the nominative case. An acute accent marks stress for learning; ё also indicates its vowel sound. Stress marks are normally omitted in everyday writing. For pronunciation, use a recorded dictionary example alongside the Russian alphabet guide; a spelling transliteration is not a phonetic transcription.

How adjective agreement works

Most full adjectives agree with the noun in gender, number, and case: новый дом (a new house), новая книга (a new book), новое окно (a new window), новые дома (new houses). In в новом доме (in the new house), both adjective and noun are prepositional. Plural adjectives do not have separate gender forms. Some borrowed adjectives are indeclinable, so this is a general pattern rather than an exception-free rule.
