Russian Vocabulary For Daily Routine

Painted illustration for Russian Vocabulary For Daily Routine
On this page

Use these first-person present-tense phrases to describe what you do during the day. For example, просыпаюсь means “I wake up.” Russian often omits я (“I”) when the verb ending makes the subject clear.

An acute accent marks the stressed vowel; ё is stressed in these examples. Stress marks are learning aids, usually omitted in ordinary writing. For the sounds, use the Russian alphabet guide and a recorded native-speaker model.

Useful distinctions

Иду means I am going on foot; еду means I am going by transport. For a regular routine, хожу на работу and езжу на работу are also useful: they describe repeated trips. Еду на метро is natural Russian for taking the subway.

Выбираю, что надеть means I choose what to wear. Надеть is used with a garment; одеть is used with a person. Одеваюсь (“I get dressed”) is correct. Умываюсь normally means washing my face; моюсь is washing myself more generally.

Мечтаю refers to daydreaming or wishing for something. To say you have dreams while asleep, use мне снятся сны. Переписываюсь is exchanging written messages, not only phone texting. Отвечаю на имейлы is informal; отвечаю на электронные письма is a more neutral alternative.
